In this four credit-hour course the participants have hands-on experiences ranging from the use of optical microscopes, examination of rock samples to observations of the solar spectrum. Throughout the course the participants work with home activities and the Internet to understand basic concepts in science including the nature of light and color, powers of ten, and microscopy. The course materials are presented in module form with typically two to three modules per week.

Goals for the course:

  • Students are expected to feel at ease with Science

  • Increase proficiency of the participants in:
    1. Experimentation
    2. Scientific Method
    3. Science concepts
    4. Scientific reporting

  • Students are expected to become comfortable with Technology

  • Students will use:
    1. Computers
    2. Internet access
    3. Optical, Scanning Electron, and Scanning Probe Microscopes
    4. Basic Science Kits

  • Students will gain increased understanding of science and technology
