In the sixteen week fall or spring semester the course is taught one evening per week for 3 hours so that teachers can participate in the class without requiring release time. Different themes are developed in each semester in order to accommodate the schedules of the faculty who teach the course. This allows the development of different modules.
The general theme of this interdisciplinary course is "Powers of Ten".
Laboratory experiments will include use of microscopes and telescopes to study objects at the smallest and largest scales. The course emphasizes topics of current interest in astronomy, geology, physics and engineering, and is intended for in service and pre-service elementary teachers. The course is divided into three basic 4-week parts: Part I. Astronomy (Wyckoff 8/309/20), Part II: Microscopy (J. Mayer 9/27-10/18), Part III: Geology (Reynolds 10/2511/15). Additional time is scheduled for instruction in the use of Macintosh computers and Hypermedia (Chesney), and in developing portfolios (E. Mayer).
