Schedule for Summer 1995

In the summer, the course is offered in a three week period, four days a week, six hours per day with 2 hour projects. A sample schedule is shown below from the course where the theme is microscopy. In the first week the subject is optical microscopes with discussion of lenses, refractive index, light and magnification/resolution. The theme of the course is to use one object as the demonstration for all three microscope techniques. For the summer session, the patterns on a CD disc have dimensions from 1 to 10 microns and hence can be viewed with optical as well as electron microscopes.
The second week electron microscopy extends the image resolution another order of magnitude. The participants learn the scanning electron microscope operating principles and have hands-on laboratory experience.
In the third week the students work with scanning probe microscopes and atomic force microscopes to obtain atomic resolution.
