MTE 180: Theory of Mathematics for Elementary School Teachers

Course Coordinator:Apple Bloom

This course provides an in-depth investigation of the mathematical content taught in elementary mathematics. Manipulative based activities provide hands-on instruction to assist students in visualizing important mathematical ideas and promoting the understanding of concepts central to the elementary mathematics curriculum. Technology and science integrated projects provide opportunities for students to explore mathematics in the context of "real world" problems. The instructional delivery models the philosophies of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Standards Documents. Class activities engage students in mathematically rich activities which promote critical thinking. Students will be encouraged to use their reasoning to think through problem solutions, and will be given opportunities to communicate their mathematical ideas. Building students' mathematical confidence is a major goal of the instructional delivery of this course.
