GRADING:   Absolute Scale -- as opposed to "curved"-- based on a maximum possible 500 points in course.

1 See Assignments sheet, for schedule of Laboratory Experiments which are done in Tu/Wed labs. Lab manual, Experiments by Exploration, available on course website (http://acept.asu.edu/courses/phs110), and paper version of Experiments by Exploration can be purchased at the ASU Bookstore (campus). Written lab reports (LR) are due one week after experiment, and should be turned in to your Lab Instructor during your regularly scheduled Lab. Your Lab Report should be written by you. Of the 13 Lab Experiments scheduled during the semester, only 8 Lab Reports (LR) will count toward your final grade. Your lowest Lab Report grade will be dropped. No make-up labs will be given.

White boards are group presentations in the labs, and require no written report. You will receive a group grade for each white board presentation. Of the 13 Lab Experiments scheduled during the semester, only 11 White Boards (WB) will count toward your final grade. Your lowest White Board grade will be dropped No make-up Home Labs will be given.

3Quizzes(closed-book) will be given randomly during the T, Th large class meetings (F101). Each quiz question will be answered electronically by individual students with his/her own Personal Response System (PRS) transmitter. Each student should have a PRS transmitter registered in his/her name with the course instructor by the 2nd week of classes. Never loan your PRS transmitter to another student or submit an answer for someone else. Each correct answer to a quiz question is worth 2 points, with 1 point given for incorrect answers, and 0 points for no answer. Quizzes are intended to test your understanding of each week’s concepts learned by doing the laboratory experiment and the reading assignments. Of the 21 quizzes during the semester, only 20 quiz grades will count toward your final grade. Your lowest quiz grade will be dropped. No make-up Quizzes will be given.

4 See Assignments sheet for the 3 Test dates and note that all are scheduled for Thursdays. All tests will be closedbook, but you are allowed to bring to the test a single 8.5" x 11" sheet containing information that you may find useful in taking the test. Sample test questions are available on the course website: (http://acept.asu.edu/courses/phs110). Make-up tests will be given only in rare circumstances, and only if supported by a legitimate documentable reason (health, etc). The make-up test will be closed-book, comprehensive, and given at the end of the semester (See course instructor to arrange time).

5Surveys will be given during three classes (Sep 2, Nov 13 and Dec 2). In order to receive 30 points, you must take all three surveys. You only receive credit if you take all three of the surveys. If you miss any (one, two or all three) surveys, 0 points will be added to your grade.

6 During the semester you should make regular entries in your Lab Book--when in labs and any time you are asked to write comments regarding phenomena in class or lab. Each lab book entry should be tagged with the date, a title/topic, followed by your thoughts/observations/comments/sketches. Your Lab books will be collected at the last lab of the semester after the Lab final exam. Please use the recommended lab book [Flexi Comp Lab Book (5 x 5 Quad ruled, 80 sheets, #774475) Available at ASU book store].No late Lab Books will be accepted.

7The Final Examination is given in two parts--a Lab Exam given in the last lab classes (T/Wed, Dec 2,3, PSH357) --- and a written Final Exam in the last class of the semester (Tues, Dec 9, PSF101). Be sure to note these dates. Do not make plans that will prevent your presence at either part of the scheduled Final Exam. No make-up final exams will be given.
