The first ACEPT Annual Teaching Innovation Awards, sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, were recently announced. The ACEPT awards support collaborative efforts to improve instruction in ASU undergraduate courses that enroll future science or mathematics teachers. Collaborative efforts may be among ASU faculty members, or between an ASU faculty member and a public school or community college faculty member. This year's award winners were: Elizabeth Jones, Katie Kolossa and Marcy Tepper, all of ASU's Mathematics Department to develop novel portfolio assessment procedures to be used in introductory mathematics courses (MTE 106, 114 and 180); Douglas Sawyer of Scottsdale Community College to work with Jim Birk of ASU's Chemistry Department to develop inquiry based labs, some of which use hand held data collection devices and computers (i.e., Computer Based Labs or CBL's), for use in introductory general chemistry courses (CHM 113, 115 and 116); Terry Ponder of Mesa Community College to work with Steve Rissing and Anton Lawson of ASU's Zoology Department to develop a new introductory inquiry based course called The Nature of Biological Science (BIO 193), which focuses on developing scientific reasoning skills; and Jim Vicich of Scottsdale Community College to work with Matthias Kawski of ASU's Mathematics Department to develop interactive text modules that exemplify the power of visualization for developing deep mathematical understanding in Calculus and Analytical Geometry (MAT 272).
