Ray Buss, ASU West College of Education, hosted the Statewide Conference.
In October ACEPT collaborated with the Eisenhower Science/Math Advisory Council to plan and organize the first state-wide conference on Arizona K-16 math/science education reform. The Conference was hosted by Ray Buss, College of Education at Arizona State University West. The two-day conference featured two invited speakers, Ron Greeley, ASU geologist and Mars Pathfinder team member, who presented some of the most recent results on NASA missions to planets and planetary satellites, and Joanne Vasquez, Science Resource Teacher, Mesa School district who presented some curricular connections in K-12 science/math education.
The conference was also highlighted by a spirited panel discussion moderated by Ernesto Ram’rez, Project Director, Phoenix Urban Systemic Initiative, a project also funded by the National Science Foundation. The panelists addressed the issue: Meeting the Science/Math Needs of All Arizona Students: What are the Cultural Barriers? Panelists included Carlon Ami, geologist, Diné College, Yolanda de la Cruz, College of Education, ASU West, and Joseph Graves, Biologist, ASU West. Also featured at the conference were break-out sessions on K-16 partnerships, effective classroom use of hand-held technologies, action research and grant proposal writing. By all accounts the conference was a great success, and we hope to continue these conferences on an annual basis.
