Mesa Systemic Initiative Workshop

As a part of ACEPT's continuing effort to support the development of innovative teaching strategies, four '97 summer workshop participants conducted a six hour workshop for Mesa Public Schools Jr. High teachers. Bill Edelbrock, Eugene Judson, Jenny Nedergaard, and Jeff Turley gathered on a Saturday morning with twenty six teachers representing all twelve of Mesa's Jr. High Schools. Each teacher is a member of "Synergy", a collective representing the science, math, and technology departments from each school. Synergy is a part of the Mesa Systemic Initiative (MSI) funded by the NSF.

The workshop consisted of an introduction to the Ti-82 graphing calculator, and it's ability to interact with Calculator Based Laboratory (CBL). Once the group had been exposed to the basics functions of the equipment, they were given two "labs" to work on. These labs were modules from the ACEPT summer workshop. The teachers were asked to present their results to the rest of the class on a whiteboard. Participants were impressed by the ease at which data was gathered and analyzed for interpretation. They loved the challenge of designing and carrying out the experiment, and felt their students would be highly motivated to do the same.

Most came to the workshop with no prior knowledge of the power of this equipment, and were anxious to begin using it in their classrooms. All indicated that follow-up opportunities should be offered on a regular basis. Their biggest concern was time it would take to become more skilled at using the equipment. They were hoping that MSI has scheduled a series of these workshops throughout the year.
